Hamilton Business District Streetscape Project
The Hamilton Business District streetscape is a project involving the study, design, and engineering of safety improvements to the Harford Road corridor between Echodale Avenue and White Avenue, in Northeast Baltimore. The project involves reducing the number of travel lanes from four lanes to three lanes, or four lanes to two lanes. Included in the study and design are the potential for the following elements:
- Road diet (lane reduction) from four lanes to two lanes with a center left-turn lane.
- Road diet (lane reduction) from four lanes to two lanes without turn lanes.
- Traffic calming measures
- Pedestrian safety improvements
- Protected bicycle lanes
- Angle parking
- “Floating” bus stops that come out from the curb
- Aesthetic improvements
- Additional crosswalks
The project is on a fast paced schedule, with design and engineering being completed in March-April, 2019, and construction completed prior to July, 2019.

Construction on the plan presented in the final meeting (see link above) is scheduled to begin on April 29, 2019, with substantial completion within the month of May. BCDOT will be monitoring the status of construction and will alert the surrounding neighborhoods of any major changes to the plan or issues in construction.
With any major change on a roadway, we do anticipate an adjustment period in which drivers, customers, and delivery services will adapt to the changes on Harford Road. During this adjustment period, we will be monitoring roadway conditions and making any necessary adjustments in the field. We appreciate the patience of those who use this corridor and look forward to future engagement.
