Traffic patterns along Lancaster and Aliceanna Streets will also be restored

The Baltimore City Department of Transportation today announced that Central Avenue in Harbor East will be fully reopened to traffic.  Construction of the Central Avenue Bridge to Harbor Point is now complete, and two lanes of traffic between Dock and Aliceanna Streets will be opened in each direction today, Friday, October 4, 2019 at approximately 12:00 noon.

Residents and visitors in Harbor East will soon be able to travel along Central Avenue from Aliceanna Street to Harbor Point in both directions, as the roadway will be fully opened to traffic.  In addition, road construction activities in the vicinity of the bridge have been completed, and normal traffic patterns will be restored in Harbor East along the following streets:

• Central Avenue between Lancaster and Aliceanna Streets
• Lancaster Street between S. Eden and S. Exeter Streets
• Aliceanna Street between S. Eden and S. Exeter Streets

Pedestrian walkways along Central Avenue at the intersections of Lancaster and Aliceanna Streets will also reopen today, and individuals will be able to utilize dedicated bike lanes along this stretch of roadway.

The rehabilitation of Central Avenue began back in the summer of 2012 and included storm drain reconstruction, roadway construction and streetscape work from Madison to Baltimore Streets.  This first phase of construction was completed in the summer of 2015.

Phase II of the project extended the streetscape improvements along Central Avenue from Baltimore to Lancaster Streets.  Work included construction of the new Harbor Point connector bridge which extended Central Avenue to Harbor Point, a 27-acre mixed-use development located on the waterfront near Harbor East.  Bridge construction began in early 2017 and it was opened to traffic in July of 2018 while additional work in the vicinity continued.

The Central Avenue Streetscape and Bridge Project is vital for the success of Harbor Point, as it provides a much-needed connection to the development site.  Phase II of the Central Avenue Streetscape and Bridge Project was awarded at $46 million.  The remainder of the project is expected to be complete by the fall of 2021.
