Department of Transportation Announces Additional Automated Enforcement Locations

New enforcement locations will increase traffic safety in city communities

Baltimore, MD (July 27, 2018) – The Baltimore City Department of Transportation today announced the addition of new automated enforcement locations, as part of the city’s Automated Traffic Violation Enforcement System (ATVES).  

Baltimore’s ATVES uses automated speed, red light and commercial vehicle height monitoring system cameras to promote safe driving habits in city communities.  This program is designed to increase safety by reducing driver speeds in school zones, decreasing the incidence of vehicles running red lights, and for commercial vehicles, reducing traffic congestion and damage to streets, homes, businesses, and other infrastructure on truck restricted (signed) roadways.

The block ranges and intersections listed for all locations below are approximations for the enforcement zones.  Enforcement at all locations may be on a temporary, rotating, or permanent basis.  To learn more about Baltimore’s ATVES program visit: https://transportation.baltimorecity.gov/automated-traffic-violation-enforcement-system.

The speed camera monitoring system consists of portable and fixed speed cameras that detect vehicles which exceed the posted speed limit by at least 12 miles per hour.  The speed cameras operate in city school zones Monday through Friday, from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM all year long and the violation is $40.00.  

Starting on August 13, 2018, speed camera monitoring systems will be added at the following locations, including multiple directions:

  • Cross Country Elementary/Middle School: 6000 – 6200 Cross Country Boulevard
  • St. Agnes School: 5000 – 5200 Baltimore National Pike
  • Calvert School: 001 to 200 West University Parkway
  • GreenMount School: 300 – 600 West 28th Street
  • GreenMount School: 300 – 600 West 29th Street
  • Creative City Public Charter School: 3900 - 4100 Reisterstown Road
  • Frederick Douglas High School, Independence School Local I High, and Gwynn’s Falls Elementary School: 2600 – 3000 Reisterstown Road
  • Graceland Park-O’Donnell Heights Elementary/Middle School: 5500 – 6500 O’Donnell Street
  • Eutaw Marshburn Elementary School and Booker T. Washington Middle School: 1500 – 1700 Eutaw Place
  • Commodore John Rodgers Elementary/Middle School: 1900 – 2100 E. Fayette Street
  • Northwood Appold Community Academy: 1300 – 1500 E. Cold Spring Lane
  • Cardinal Shehan School: 1600 – 2000 Belvedere Avenue
  • Vivien T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy: 001 – 400 S and N Monroe Street
  • Federal Hill Preparatory Academy and Digital Harbor High School: 100 Block W. Ostend Street
  • City Neighbors Hamilton Elementary/High School and Arts and Ideas Sudbury School: 3400 – 3600 Echodale Avenue

The red light camera monitoring system consists of stationary cameras that use sensors working in conjunction with traffic control signals to record images of motor vehicles entering an intersection during a red light signal phase.  Photos and videos are taken from the rear of the vehicle with the red light signal visible, both before the vehicle enters the intersection and while it is traveling through it.  The red light enforcement cameras are operational 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and the fine is $75.00

Beginning on August 13, 2018, Red Light Camera Monitoring Systems will be added at the following locations, including multiple directions:

  • N. Paca Street and West Fayette Street
  • St. Paul Street and E. Madison Street
  • Dundalk Avenue and O’Donnell Street
  • Windsor Mill and North Forest Park Avenue

The Commercial Vehicle Height Monitoring System is used to record images of commercial vehicles traveling on a truck restricted (posted/signed) roadway in Baltimore City.  The vehicle’s height conveys to the monitoring system that the vehicle passing the camera is a truck. When a truck is detected by the camera system, photos and video are taken of the vehicle from the front in order to capture the registration identification of the vehicle’s cab. Vehicle height monitoring systems cameras are operational 24 hours a day, every day of the year, where posted (signed). 

The fine for a Commercial Vehicle Height Monitoring system violation is a warning for the first offense, $125.00 for the second offense and $250.00 for the third and/or subsequent offenses.
