REMINDER: Light Street to Close for Removal of Tower Crane

Motorists should use alternate routes as traffic in the downtown area will be significantly impacted

The Baltimore City Department of Transportation would like to advise motorists that a portion of Light Street will be closed for the removal of a tower crane.  As construction of a new building in the central business district nears completion, Light Street will need to be closed for the disassembly and removal of a tower crane that was used to build the new facility.

To facilitate the tower crane removal, Light Street will be closed to traffic between Baltimore and Redwood Streets beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 01, 2018 with detours in effect.  This portion of Light Street will remain closed until approximately 5:00 a.m. on Monday, August 06, 2018

In addition, Redwood Street will also be closed at the intersection of Light Street during this time.  Local access to Redwood Street east of Light Street will be maintained from Calvert Street, and local access west of Light Street will be maintained via Charles Street.

Variable message signs will be deployed in the area to alert motorists of the closure.  Transportation Enforcement Officers (TEOs) will also be deployed to assist with the movement of traffic in the downtown area. Motorists should plan ahead for this closure by allowing additional travel time and utilizing alternate routes to avoid the area.

During the closure, the detour route in the central business district redirects motorists west on Fayette Street, south on Hopkins Place/Sharp Street to Conway Street.  Citizens that typically use St. Paul/Light Street to access the downtown area should use alternate routes to avoid this area, such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard or Greene/Russell Streets.  Motorists with destinations outside of the downtown area are strongly encouraged to use alternate routes that bypass the central business district in order to avoid congestion and delays.

Alternate Routes to South Baltimore (from St. Paul Street):

  • Turn right on Chase Street to Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, left on Pratt Street, right on Light Street
  • Turn right on Franklin Street, left on Greene Street, left on Pratt Street, right on Light Street

Alternate Routes to I-395/I-95/I-295 (from St. Paul Street):

  • Turn right onto Chase Street to Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, exit at Russell Street for I-295 OR continue onto I-395
  • At Centre Street, bear right onto “Upper” St. Paul, turn right onto Franklin Street, left onto Greene Street to Russell Street.  Take the ramp to I-95 OR continue straight for I-295.
